Meraki Logo & Meaning

The word Meraki is of Greek origins and means to do something with soul, creativity or love and to put something of yourself into your work.

My sister sent me the word and its definition a few years ago via text message and I instantly fell in love with it. I remember exactly where I was and what I was doing when I read it. It resinated with me so strongly and it planted the seed that would become Meraki Collections 3 years later. (Thank you Ev! X)

I now had a beautiful business name with meaning but I knew it needed the right logo design for it to become a real brand. After weeks of sketching, I came to the conclusion that this was going to be one of the things I needed to outsource for the right outcome. My attempted logo designs were almost comical. I asked my friend Stephanie, who is a Graphic Designer by trade, if she would like to tackle the project of creating a logo for me, she said yes and it has been the best decision I have made for the business thus far.

Steph wanted to embody the labels ethos and philosophy within the logo design. She asked me a series of questions and had me do some deep soul searching to figure out what I wanted Meraki Collections to become and convey and then took all the information and worked her magic.

Within her first draft of logo designs, I saw the one that was screaming to be mine – “Option 1”.  Aesthetically I loved it. Then I looked down to see a little written explanation for why this option looked the way it did, and I fell in love even more.

Here I would like to share with you an original excerpt from this draft showing the Meraki Collections logo and branding, and its beautiful meaning. I hope that by sharing the story behind the design, you will appreciate the logo you now see all over this website as much as I do!

“For Option 1: I customised an existing font, cutting out elements, and replacing forms with circles. I put a circle under the ‘m’ to give the logo a feeling of being balanced. I want to communicate that your brand ethos plays a lot with the idea of balance: The balance of an everyday piece that could still be worn to special events and the character of a statement piece, with the quality of being timeless. Strong minimal styles, that still have a personal, warm charm.” –Stephanie Yap
